Dear Friend & Associate:
Can you believe it is May already! This year is flying by. I wanted to let all of you know about three events I have been to over the past couple of weeks all of them benefiting different charities! The first was the Pearl Ball held on the grounds of the Sam Davis Home in Smyrna last Saturday night. It was a star studded event that benefits the Sarah Cannon Cancer Research Center. Since many of us in my family and our friends have been stricken with this deadly disease I have a big passion for this organization. The Stone Crest Hospital and staff started this fundraiser last year and it was a huge success for the second year in a row. I worked on the committee this year and found it very rewarding to be a part of this huge event! We had a blast and look forward to doing it again next year~ |
The second event I attended this past Wednesday night was MAX IT OUT! Max It Out is an event that started 4 years ago as a fundraiser to benefit the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital Meningitis Research Foundation. Max was a baby who was diagnosed with Meningitis 6 weeks after he was born and because of it, he has suffered sever brain damage and has many disabilities. His parents went together with some celebrities and started this event in hopes that all the money they could raise yearly would go towards the research of this disease in hopes they could find a cure! My great friend, Anthony Oldham, from 95.5 The Wolf was successful in finding and giving them to me! TWO ALL ACCESS PASSES!!! Many artists gave their time to this event and I got to meet several of them. They included Martina McBride, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Billy Volek and the gorgeous KEITH URBAN! Anyone who knows me, knows I am not someone who is easily star struck - BUT those of you that really know me know that KEITH URBAN is MY man (ha)! It has taken me three years to get close enough to meet him, let alone get to have him put his arm around me and call me sweetheart - but guess what - IT FINALLY HAPPENED! Yes he is gorgeous in person!!!! Anyway, back to the event, I bought a REALLY expenses pair of flip flops, but all of you know I have a shoe fetish and the money went to a GREAT cause. Maybe next year you can check out the event. It is held at the Wild Horse Saloon and open to the public. Thanks Anthony!
Last but certainly not least, yesterday I spent the day on the golf course with my golf posse (ha) - raising money for Habitat for Humanity! This is the 10th Anniversary of the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors and Habitat for Humanity pairing up to raise money to build a home! We had a great day - the weather held up - and it was a nice way to wrap up this week!
As you can see, I truly believe in giving back to the community in which I live! I know we can’t always say YES, but I encourage you to get involved with something that you have a passion for and that will benefit those less fortunate than you!
Best wishes for a great month ahead, and as always please keep our TEAM in mind for your Real Estate needs or refer us to a friend~
Sincerely,
Kendra Cooke, Broker ABR, CRS, Vice President
P.S. I will be out of town May 25 - June 4th! Greg and I are renewing our vows on the Memorial Day weekend and taking a trip to recuperate from the house building and wedding planning - ha! Hope to see you soon~

Perennials lend versatility and tie a garden together By Joe Lamp'l
Perennial plants and flowers come in virtually every shape, size, color and texture. As you observe the natural landscape, these combinations come into play without you even realizing it. As we plan our gardens, perennials are the plants of choice to fill in those lower and mid layers with whatever form, color and texture desired. They are what ties gardens together in a pattern of rhythm, balance and even punctuation.
As you work with perennials in landscape or garden design, keep in mind a few important guidelines to ensure a great looking and vibrant, long lasting garden.
Right plant, right place: First, know what growing conditions you have for the area in which you want to plant. A perennial requiring full sun and well-drained soil will languish in a shady or boggy site, so plan accordingly. Conversely, a plant that prefers shade will appear washed out and stunted when grown in full sun. Next, pick plants that are suitable to your climate. A perennial that's hardy in zone 7 may die in zone 5, so do your homework first and make sure the plants you like are suited for your region or even microclimate. If you're unsure, call your county extension service office. The people there will be happy to assist you with appropriate choices and varieties for your climate.
Use layers to showcase plants: As you lay out your garden, plan for the tallest plants and flowers to go toward the back of the border or center of the bed, assuming you have access around the bed. Then plant out from there, layering down, so that the shortest plants are in the front. The best landscape designs use this technique. It allows the garden to appear full, while showing off as many plants as possible.
It's not all about the flower: Although perennials are beautiful when in flower and can make for a stunning display, the blooms last only a couple of weeks in many cases. So plan your design around form, texture and color of the foliage. The best-looking designs incorporate diversity, and this is where form and texture really come into play. Think of it like this: When perennials are in full bloom, who notices the foliage? But, for the 80 percent of the time that we see the plants not in bloom, all we can see is foliage. Try placing large, thick-foliage plants like hosta just behind the finer smaller foliage of Astilbe or juniper. Or try a tall spiky fern fronted by the dark green, glossy foliage of a wild ginger. You get the idea. It's fun to experiment with different combinations to incorporate all three design elements. You'll be a better gardener for it.
So the next time you head to the garden center to plan your perennial garden, think beyond the flower, and focus on the plant combinations that work well together when not in bloom. Then you'll have a garden that looks great even after the flowers fade.
